Laista is a village of Epirus and belongs to the prefecture of Ioannina. The village of Laista is one of the 46 villages of Zagorochoria and is specifically located in Central Zagori. Laista, built at an altitude of 1020m. on the slopes of southern Tymfi, was founded in 1850. The village is surrounded by fir trees, pines and crystal clear waters. In the 18th and 19th century, Laista was the only big village of Zagori. But during the German occupation was destroyed. In the years that followed, migration and urbanization evacuated residents from Laista. As a result, according to the 2011 census, in the village stay 60 inhabitants. The people who remain in the village are mainly engaged in farming, logging, and tourism. In recent years Laista faces serious landslide problem.
Laista is 80 km. away from Ioannina. From Thessaloniki you can cover a distance of 260 km. through Egnatia Road and arrive in Ioannina, or head to Konitsa. From Athens you can come to Ioannina via Patras, covering 445km., or via the National Road Athens - Lamia.
In Laista you can visit the Church of the Archangels, that was built in 1770, St. Nicholas, St. George, where there is the tree that Kosmas Aitolos taught, and Agios Charalambos with stunning views. You can also visit the Church of the Holy Trinity in the deserted Palaiochori Laistas. In the village you can see the old watermill, the old village school which was built in 1908 and the neighborhood with the old mansions on top of the mountain.
In Laista you can find hotels and hostels for your stay that will offer you comfortable hospitality. Also in Laista you can eat in taverns and restaurants, tasting traditional Zagori dishes and Greek cuisine. Visitors of Laista plan excursions in the forest, where the view is superb. Also, during the winter months visit the Ski Center of Vasilitsa Grevena that is approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes away.
If you visit Laista you can visit by car the rest of the villages in Central Zagori as Vrisohori, Iliochori with beautiful waterfalls, Vovousa, Skamnelli and Tsepelovo. You can also visit other popular destinations like Konitsa, Grevena, Ioannina and Metsovo.
