Itea is a village in the prefecture of Ioannina in Epirus. The village of Itea, built at an altitude of 911m., is one of the 46 villages of Zagorochoria and namely belongs to East Zagori. In the 2011 census Itea had 70 residents. The total area of Itea is 18000 acres, of which 4000 is cultivated, 3000 are covered by forest, while 11000 are forage area. Itea until 1747 or 1749 called Ntouchanista. This period preceded the extinction of the extract Arvanites - Liapis and probably for this reason the village was named Liapis. At this period Itea was destroyed by the Turks. In 1855 and 1912 also burned by the Turkish army. In 1919 the village was officially recognized as community Liapis, but in 1955 was renamed in Itea. Today one of the villages of Itea keeps the name Liapis.
Itea is 36 km. away from Ioannina. From Thessaloniki you can cover a distance of 260 km. through Egnatia Road and arrive in Ioannina, or head to Konitsa. From Athens you can come to Ioannina via Patras, covering 445km., or via the National Road Athens - Lamia.
In Itea you can visit the church of Agia Paraskevi, as well as the stone bridge Kaber Aga. Itea, like other villages of Eastern Zagori, may lie in the shadow of tourist development of the villages of West Zagori, but the traditional character and nature will charm you. Only stone houses, stone paths and fountains, picturesque squares, historic churches and arched bridges suffice to make you go to Itea and the wider region of East Zagori.
For your stay in Itea, but also for your board, you can choose a village of East Zagori. If you visit the area, do not miss the opportunity to tour the forests of East Zagori. Those visiting the area resort to various activities like hiking, trekking, horse riding etc.
Next to Itea are other villages of East Zagori as Petra and Agia Paraskevi. Near Itea lies the city of Ioannina and 28 km away Metsovo.
