MONODENDRI

Monodendri is one of the most touristic villages of Epirus. Built at an altitude of 1060 m. combines natural beauty with breathtaking views and deservedly occupies a position among the most beautiful villages of Zagorochoria. Monodendri belongs to Central Zagori of prefecture of Ioannina. The village Monodendri founded in 1412 next to Voidomatis river, a tributary of Aoos, and Vikos Gorge. Initially, Monodendri and the nearby village Vitsa were together a community. However, during the 17th century, the villages became independent mostly because of population growth. It is said that Monodendri name came from a huge fir tree that stood in the village. In recent years and especially during the winter months Monodendri has enjoyed great tourist development. Like the other Zagorochoria, so Monodendri has adopted the local architecture with stone alleys and stone-built houses.

ACCESS TO MONODENDRI :

Monodendri is 41 km. from Ioannina. From Thessaloniki you can cover a distance of 260 km. through Egnatia Road and arrive in Ioannina, or head to Konitsa.From Athens you can come to Ioannina via Patras, covering 445km., or via the National Road Athens - Lamia.

ATTRACTIONS IN MONODENDRI :

In Monodendri you can see the church of Agios Athanasios in the central square of the village, the church of Saint George and the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi. You can also visit the archaeological site in Genitsari and stone towers in Oxia. Here you can enjoy excellent views of both the gorge and the river Aoos. The village has a stone theater that is built amphitheater and where, during the summer months, committed numerous cultural events. Monodendri has, additional, exhibition center and handicraft and housekeeping school. From the position of the monastery of Agia Paraskevi, the position of Oxia and the position of Gkrounias one can enjoy the wonderful view of the village to the slopes of Tymfi and Astraka. From Monodendri was descended Manthos and Georgios Rizaris, who were national benefactors, merchants and members of the Friendly Society, Athanasios Psalidas, who was a great teacher of the Nation, scholar and writer and one of the major forms of Hellenism, and other prominent men .
