GREVENITI

Greveniti is a village that belongs to the East Zagori of the prefecture of Ioannina in Epirus. Greveniti is a village built at an altitude of 980 meters. in an area full of oaks. In the census of 2011 the village numbered 162 inhabitants. Most are mainly engaged in logging, farming and breeding bees. Visitor of Zagorochoria must not skip to visit Greveniti, surrounded by green forests and abundant springs. The houses in Greveniti do not follow the traditional local architecture, unlike the churches and streets of the village. This is due to the fact that Greveniti during the Second World War burned many times by the Germans resulting in destroyed houses and executed residents. For this reason, Greveniti has declared martyr village.

ACCESS TO GREVENITI :

Greveniti is 35 km. away from Ioannina. From Thessaloniki you can cover a distance of 260 km.through Egnatia Road and arrive in Ioannina, or head to Konitsa. From Athens you can come to Ioannina via Patras, covering 445km., or via the National Road Athens - Lamia.

ATTRACTIONS IN GREVENITI :

In Greveniti you can visit the citadel of the village near the monastery Voutsas or Votsas, also known as Mary Pogoniotissa. This historic monastery was looted during the German occupation. Near the monastery Voutsas is located river Bardas. Also in the square there are trees and there stands the church of the Assumption, built in 1730. Remarkable is the church of St. Demetrius, which is adorned with paintings of the 17th century. In the area you can also see the stone bridge of Kourtia and the bridge Tsipianis, which was built in 1875 and is close to Miliotades. In Greveniti there is a monument built in 1991 in honor of the executed during the German occupation. In Greveniti however, will not escape your attention the many traditional stone fountains. Shortly after the village, towards Vovousa, is the stream of Zourikas. There exists also a farm for breeding trout.

Recent years there is great tourist development in Greveniti, where you will find guesthouses and hostels for your stay and restaurants for your meals. From Greveniti you can hike admiring the nature in the forest of East Zagori. Many walkers choose the following path: starting from the Monastery Voutsas and crossing the bridge of Kourtia and the ravine of Varda reach the village Doliani through a course of 3-4 h.

If you visit Greveniti, you can also visit the nearby Zagorochoria like Tristeno,  Miliotades, Flabourari etc. Quite near is the artificial lake of Aoos river. If you visit, do not hesitate to go round the artificial lake of Aoos sources, while enjoying the natural beauty of the landscape. Near Greveniti is the city of Ioannina and Metsovo.
