KASTANONAS - DRAGARI

Kastanonas is a mountainous village of Ioannina in Epirus. Kastanonas is one of the 46 villages of Zagorochoria and specifically belongs to East Zagori. Kastanonas got its name from the many chestnut trees that exist in the region. Formerly the village was called Dragari. The village of Kastanona is built at an altitude of 1030m. on the slopes of Northern Pindos. In 2011 the village had 44 residents. During the German occupation (1941-1944) Kastanonas was burned, so very few aspects of the village retained until now the traditional architecture of Zagori. During this period, it is said that of the 28 houses in the village were destroyed 22 along with two churches and a school. Therefore, the current Kastanonas considered historic village. But despite the damage that has suffered, is one of the most romantic villages of Zagorochoria, perhaps the most romantic because of the nature that surrounds it. The East Zagori, no doubt, lies in the shadow of the tourist development of the Western Zagori, but is quieter and more authentic and is mainly aimed at guests looking for something similar.

ACCESS TO KASTANONAS – DRAGARI :

Kastanonas is 48 km. away from Ioannina. From Thessaloniki you can cover a distance of 260 km. through Egnatia Road and arrive in Ioannina, or head to Konitsa. From Athens you can come to Ioannina via Patras, covering 445km., or via the National Road Athens - Lamia.

ATTRACTIONS IN KASTANONAS – DRAGARI :

In Kastanonas dominates the church of Virgin and Agios Athanasios built in 1798. If you visit Kastanonas, you can also visit the arched bridge in Drogani. Furthermore, the forests of East Zagori, that surround the area, are remarkable.
