CAVE OF PERAMA IOANNINA

The Cave of Perama is 4 km. away from Ioannina, in the picturesque village Perama. The cave was created 1.5 million years ago inside a hill above the village. In Gorica hill, so, was discovered the Cave of Perama in 1940, during World War II, from the villagers, as they were looking for shelters to protect themselves from German bombing. After the war Constantine Kasvikis, an amateur caver, first photographed the cave and then, in 1956, speleologists Ioannis and Anna Petrochilou started exploring and mapping.

The Cave of Perama belongs to the limestone caves and is considered one of the best caves in the world because it presents a great variety of stalactites and stalagmites. There are a total of 19 rooms in which is spread the underground wealth and 19 species of stalagmites and stalactites.
