MANASSIS

Manassis is one of the villages in Central Zagori located in the prefecture of Ioannina in Epirus. The village is built at an altitude of 900m. on the northern slopes of the mountain Mitsikeli between the villages Kaloutas and Dikorfo. Manassis was declared traditional settlement as it maintains elements of Zagoritiki architecture. The village dates back to the 15th century. It is not known when Manassis was built, nor by whom, nor why he got this name. Perhaps it comes from the surname Manassis. During power of Ali Pasha the village was very rich and so was hit by a lot of bandits. During the German occupation, on 13 October 1943 was burned by the Germans. With a presidential decree of 2005 officially recognized as a martyr village. In the village today live few people who daily live in fear of bears. Bears have been seen in the courtyards of houses, in the fields, even on a roof of a cafe. The bears look for food in settlements, but this is certainly a major problem for the villagers.

ACCESS TO MANASSIS :

Manassis is 43km. away from Ioannina. From Thessaloniki you can cover a distance of 260 km. through Egnatia Road and arrive in Ioannina, or head to Konitsa. From Athens you can come to Ioannina via Patras, covering 445km., or via the National Road Athens - Lamia.

ATTRACTIONS IN MANASSIS :

The village Manassis has a small picturesque square, mansions, bridges and fountains. In Manassis are the bridge of Matsopoulos and the bridge of Lakotsoliou, as well as the vaulted fount. The most important monument of the village is the church of St. George that was built in 1780.
