KONITSA OF IOANNINA

Konitsa is a town of Ioannina in Epirus. Located north of Ioannina, close to the border with Albania, and is built on the slope of Trapezitsa of mountain of Pindos, at an altitude of 630m. Konitsa has a health center, market and schools and is the most central area to the surrounding villages. Heyday observed during the period of Ali Pasha, because from there came his mother Hamko. The village is facing the plain of Konitsa, where the three rivers Aoos, Voidomatis and Sarantaporos meet. The plain is cultivated by the inhabitants of Konitsa. The name Konitsa probably derives from the Slavic word konitza meaning "horse bazaar."

Konitsa is 64 km.  away from Ioannina, 269 km. from Thessaloniki, 485 km. from Athens and 291 km. from Patra.

ATTRACTIONS IN KONITSA:

In Konitsa stand stone buildings and houses from the Ottoman period, churches and monasteries, cobbled streets and stone bridges. An important attraction is the Konitsa bridge built in 1870 at a cost of 120,000 piastres from Frontzos Ziogas, who came from Mastorochoria. In the arch of the bridge stands a small bell, which warned pedestrians not to cross the bridge when strong wind was blowing. Konitsa stands towering ancestral home of Hamko, while nearby is the mosque of Sultan Suleiman and the old Ottoman seminary, which was restored and now includes an exhibition of photographs from the sites. In Konitsa we can say that is concentrated the whole beauty of Epirus, as there can be seen Aoos, Voidomatis and Sarantaporos that are the most beautiful rivers in Epirus, in conjunction with Smolikas and Grammos, mountains that dominate the region.

The same dates is organized and "Epirus Mushroom Festival", which includes mushroom exhibition, speeches, forest excursions, meals with mushrooms etc.
