Elatochori is a beautiful, mountain village of Ioannina and belongs to the geographical region of Epirus. Elatochori is located in East Zagori and until 1927 was called Tsernesi. The village is built at an altitude of 1110 m. at the foot of the Tsuka Gina, who is a mountain of Epirus full of firs and pines and belongs to the part of North Pindos. The local Elatochori apartment consists of two settlements, Elatochori and Dilakko. Today at Elatochori live about 80 permanent residents, who are mainly engaged in agriculture, cultivating potatoes and lima beans, and logging. In summer the festivals of Elatochori attracts people and increase the population of the village.
Elatochori is 57 km. away from Ioannina. From Thessaloniki you can cover a distance of 260 km.through Egnatia Road and arrive in Ioannina, or head to Konitsa. From Athens you can come to Ioannina via Patras, covering 445km., or via the National Road Athens - Lamia.
Elatochori has three churches: the church of St. George, which is located in the village square, the church of the Assumption and Ai-Lias. In Dilakko is the church of Agios Athanasios. In the area you can see lakes, rivers, forests and stone bridges. Very close to the village is the mountain Tsouka Rosa teeming with rich fauna and flora. Pines, firs, beeches and sycamores along with wild boars, bears and hares compose the natural environment.
Elatochori offers a hostel in the village and, also, has a café where you can enjoy your coffee. A few kilometers away from Elatochori is the artificial lake of Aoos river. If you visit, do not hesitate to go round the artificial lake of Aoos sources, while enjoying the natural beauty of the landscape.
Close to Elatochori are some neighboring Zagorochoria, which you can visit, such as Flabourari, Makrino, Doliani, Greveniti, and Tristeno. Further afield, you can visit very touristic villages as Papingo and Vikos, that will compensate you with their natural beauty. You should, also, know that the nearest town is Ioannina and the nearest largest village is Metsovo.
