The village of Kalouta is in Epirus and belongs to the prefecture of Ioannina. It is one of the 46 villages of Zagorochoria. It is located in Central Zagori. Kalouta (or Kalota) is built on the northern slopes of Mitsikeli in height of 830 m. For the name of the village there are two versions. Whether it is a Slav place name meaning black or the village owes its name to the Kalota family that came from Ioannina and some of her members settled in the area. The village has been declared a traditional settlement as maintain elements of traditional local architecture. During the German occupation the village of Kalouta suffered damages. On 23 October of 1943 the Germans burned the village to report two dead and seventy houses burnt. For this reason, in 2005 by presidential decree Kalouta officially recognized as a martyr village.
Kalouta is 44km. away from Ioannina. From Thessaloniki you can cover a distance of 260 km. through Egnatia Road and arrive in Ioannina, or head to Konitsa. From Athens you can come to Ioannina via Patras, covering 445km., or via the National Road Athens - Lamia.
In Kalouta you can see various attractions such as: the Monastery of Visikou built in 1114, Metamorphosis Sotiros built in 1854, the fountain of Despot, the bridge of Kalouta built in 1812 and the Roman fortress ruins and the Latin inscription on the old settlement Skamnia.
For your stay in Kalouta you can select a nearby village of Central Zagori. The same goes for your diet. In Central Zagori you will find hotels, guesthouses and taverns for a pleasant stay.
If you visit Kalouta, you can also visit the neighboring Central Zagorochoria, as Dikorfo, Manassis, Dipotamo, Anthracitis etc. The West and East Zagori would be ideal destinations for excursions. Also popular destinations near Kalouta is Ioannina, Metsovo and Konitsa.
