Karyes is a village in Epirus belonging specifically to the prefecture of Ioannina. Karyes is built at an altitude of 630m. at East Zagori, covering an area of 9748 acres. After 1950 in the village were built several houses while others were renovated. Also the highway that connects the villages Miliotades - Karyes – Kavallari was constructed, and bridges were built in the river while the square of Karyes was formed. Originally the village was called Monglious, which according to John Lambridis means "place of cloudy". In 1928 it took the name Karydies and in 1940 the name Karyes from the many walnut trees that exist in the village. According to the 2011 census, the village has 119 residents.
Karyes is 35 km. away from Ioannina. From Thessaloniki you can cover a distance of 260 km. through Egnatia Road and arrive in Ioannina, or head to Konitsa. From Athens you can come to Ioannina via Patras, covering 445km., or via the National Road Athens - Lamia.
Shortly after Karyes, on the road to Miliotades is the church of St. Nicholas. In this direction lies the Zagorian river, which is united by many bridges.
For accommodation and your board in Karyes you can choose one of the villages of East Zagori. If you visit the area, do not miss the opportunity to tour the forests of East Zagori. Those visiting the area resort to various activities like hiking, trekking, horse riding etc.
If you visit Karyes you can also visit the nearby Zagorochoria like Kavallari, Panagia, Miliotades, Potamia. Quite close to the village is the city of Ioannina and a little further stands Metsovo.
