KOLYBITHRES (FONTS) IN PAPIGO PAPINGO ROCK POOLS

On the way from  Megalo Papigo to Mikro Papigo, about 500 meters before you reach Mikro Papigo, you will find on your left the stream of Rogovo and the sign will inform you about the fonts. The Rogovo stream comes from the western tip of Tymfi and crosses the Megalo and Mikro Papigo. Following the path, after a few minutes you will see the first fonts, and then you can continue to watch all of them, other larger and other smaller. Locals call them "ovires". The fonts are actually cavities in limestone rocks created by the movement of the stream Rogovou waters. It is a stone geological formation where you will find natural pools. This phenomenon was exploited by the locals, who check their level by artificial barriers and thus open or close the fonts. When dams are closed pools are created by running, crystalline water, suitable only for swimming during the summer months. But when the dams are opened and the flow of water is natural, you can observe the erosion of water on the rocks. During the summer months you can dive into the waters of a font. According to the story, even Ali Pasha of Ioannina did swimming in fonts in summer period. Of course, water is always cold. Even if you don’t try a splash, you can enjoy the tranquility of nature with dense vegetation and gorgeous colors.
