Koukouli is in Epirus and belongs to the prefecture of Ioannina. It is one of the 46 villages of Zagorochoria and specifically is located in Central Zagori. Koukouli is built at an altitude of 900m. near the southern edge of the Vikos Gorge, the National Park of Vikos - Aoos. The village was named Koukouli of the many stones that exist in the region (from the Latin cuculla = hood) or of the sericulture that perhaps previously dealt with the inhabitants. The village in the past decade knows intense tourist development, especially during the winter months.
Koukouli is 38 km. away from Ioannina. From Thessaloniki you can cover a distance of 260 km. through Egnatia Road and arrive in Ioannina, or head to Konitsa. From Athens you can come to Ioannina via Patras, covering 445km., or via the National Road Athens - Lamia.
In Koukouli you can see the building complex with five taps, the old school, the church of the Assumption built in 1788 and the traditional guesthouse, all samples of the exceptional architecture of Zagori. The houses, the footpaths and the main square also retain the local architecture. In Koukouli you can see the Natural Museum of Konstantinos Lazaridis that includes a historic library and collection of herbs and flowers of the region. In the village stands the mansion Plakidas, which is one of the most famous mansions of Zagori. Outside the village there are the following stone bridges: Kalogeriko or Plakida, which is three-arched, the Noutsos or Kokkorou built in 1750, the Kontodimos or Lazaridis and Misios.
In Koukouli you can find hotels and guesthouses for a comfortable and welcoming stay. In the village there are restaurants and cafes to try typical dishes and sip your coffee.
If you visit Koukouli can browse in general in all the villages of Zagorochoria and enjoy the rich nature and the picturesque villages. Near Koukouli are other villages of Central Zagori such as Kipi, Vitsa, Kapesovo, Dilofo, Vradeto etc. Closer to Koukouli is the city of Ioannina, while if you want to travel a little further you can visit the picturesque Metsovo and Konitsa.
