Petra is a village in the prefecture of Ioannina in Epirus. It is one of the 46 villages of Zagorochoria and belongs to East Zagori. Petra is built at an altitude of 933m. and according to the 2011 census in the village lived 153 permanent residents. Petra, like other villages of Eastern Zagori, may lie in the shadow of tourist development of the villages of West Zagori, but the traditional character and nature will charm you. Only stone houses, stone paths and fountains, picturesque squares, historic churches and arched bridges suffice to make you visit Petra and the wider region of East Zagori.
Petra is 40 km. away from Ioannina. From Thessaloniki you can cover a distance of 260 km. through Egnatia Road and arrive in Ioannina, or head to Konitsa. From Athens you can come to Ioannina via Patras, covering 445km., or via the National Road Athens - Lamia.
In Petra you can visit the area of Agia Paraskevi where two majestic cliffs dominate. The climb on the rocks made with normal concrete staircase of 68 stairs built in 1970. Previously, they used to climb a wooden staircase. In the area of Agia Paraskevi, was built the holy temple in 1973. Between 1978 and 1982 the yard of the church was fenced with barbed wire.
