(how to come)
The Cave of Perama is 4 km. away from Ioannina, in the picturesque village Perama. The cave was created 1.5 million years ago inside a hill above the village. In Gorica hill, so, was discovered the Cave of Perama in 1940, during World War II, from the villagers, as they were looking for shelters to protect themselves from German bombing. After the war Constantine Kasvikis, an amateur caver, first photographed the cave and then, in 1956, speleologists Ioannis and Anna Petrochilou started exploring and mapping.
The Cave of Perama belongs to the limestone caves and is considered one of the best caves in the world because it presents a great variety of stalactites and stalagmites. There are a total of 19 rooms in which is spread the underground wealth and 19 species of stalagmites and stalactites. The number is extremely large, as in most Greek caves we find 6 to 10 different species. The length of the route is about 1500 meters, although it has a total area of 14.800 sq. The journey takes 45 minutes, in which visitors climb up or go down the paths and stairs that cross the cave. The temperature of the Cave of Perama is firmly in 17 C and the water temperature is 14 C. On the inside you will see stalactites starting from the roof of the cave, stalagmites grow from the ground, cave pearls, etc. Interesting are the fossilized bones and teeth of a rare species of bear, the cave bear, found in the cave. The various types, the variety of formations and the colors of the cave catch the interest of visitors of the Cave of Perama.
It is characteristic that the Cave of Perama is regarded by speleologists active, because it has not stopped forming and this is understood mainly from the lakes it reserves but also by the drops at the ends of stalagmites. But we ourselves can figure out the moisture in our skin and clothes. When the visitor finishes the tour and climbs back again to light, the first thing he sees is the Lake of Ioannina, the Pamvotida Lake. Then follows a path that will lead him back to the cave entrance, while enjoys the view from Ioannina, the lake, the island of Ioannina and from the mountains.
