Vikos Gorge is located in the prefecture of Ioannina and is the core of the National Park of Vikos-Aoos. It dominates in a magnificent site that is full of various species of flora and fauna. The fauna includes many rare species and the area is a haven for different species. It is important that in the gorge all human activities associated with farming and logging is strictly prohibited. This ban has contributed to creating this enabling environment for rare and endangered species. Moreover, the flora of the area comprises a plurality of rare herbs, many of which have medicinal properties. Until the early 20th century practical doctors used herbs canyon for various treatments.
Vikos Gorge has opening 1100 at its narrowest point and at the same time depth of over 900 meters. Its length is 12 km. and the highest point reaches 1000m. The gorge is crossed by Voidomatis river that has water from November to June. Vikos Gorge is a particularly popular destination as it is one of the most impressive in the world. Remarkably, according to the Guinness World Records, is the deepest canyon in proportion to the width worldwide. For this reason it is certainly one of the main attractions of Zagori.
The beginning of the gorge is near to village Tsepelovo, while the end is in the bridge of Aristi. In the middle of the gorge meets another great canyon Mega Lakos and gorge Mezaria. The best way to cross the gorge is via a marked trail that begins from Monodendri village and ends at the village Vikos. Browsers follow a route of about 6 hours that offers unique beauty. The descent into the ravine can be made from many villages of Zagori. From Beloi position near Vradeto, from Oxia and the monastery of Agia Paraskevi in Monodendri, as well as the Vikos village the view to the gorge is panoramic and literally breathtaking. It should of course be noted that the route is tedious for many hikers as the ground is uneven and includes many ascents and descents. However, the view will undoubtedly compensate you.
